Man or Monkey: What to do about those primal urges?
Its been demonstated that genetically we are within 1 or 2 percent of most animal species. It likely took a team of scientist years and millions of dollars to discover what a side by side clip comparison on monkeys mating and a typical bar scene could have proven.
So much of human life is a battle between the higher and lower brain functions. It is truely incredible how much of our behaviour is completely illogalical according to our higher brain but bang on if you look a little deeper to our unconscious mind and ultimately our animal instincts. Why do we so often choose to surpress seemingly healthy urges or desires that will inevitably be satisfied, only to leave us with a feeling of guilt or disgust. On the flip side why have so many individuals allowed their animal instincts, that of being sexy, strong, agressive or proud flatline only to surcumb to an emotion and passionless existence?
If you’re hoping for answers you won’t find them here. The purpose of this article is not to offer answers to questions that can not be answered. Rather, I want to lay out a 24 hour challenge to my readers.
For the next 24 hours (whenever that is for you) I want you to be fully conscious of all your behaviours. When you randomly crave a blueberry muffin at 1am ask yourself what function that serves and why that craving occured. Thinking of calling a former lover, think about which of your needs are being met through this action and whether or not it really serves you. Your conscious mind is an expert in justifying desires of your unconscious into what appear to be logical reasons, we’ve all heard “Its probably best to take another day off the gym, they say you should rest.” Unfortunately, until you’ve trained it the desires of your unconscious mind rarely align with your best interests.
Try this for at least 24 hours, if you’re insane do it for a week and your life will never be the same again.
I work with entrepreneurs to provide them with the confidence, focus and strategies needed to successfully build their first business.
Take Action Today,
Dan Johnston.
